Mountain Vista school in Oracle held their annual Family Reading Night in March drawing more than 100 kids. There were lots of games including reading by flashlight in the library. And there were lots of prizes. The Arizona Literacy Fund, based in SaddleBrooke, donated 100 “Adventures of Carly and Charly” books. A good time was had by all.
SaddleBrooke supports Mountain Vista school in many ways (Oracle School Foundation, Kids Closet, scholarship programs) including the recently launched afterschool reading tutor program for 2nd and 3rd graders. The Spring 2026 pilot program was a rousing success and we have big plans for the 2026/2027 school year.
One of the innovations was the assignment of two tutors per child – one tutor to cover the Monday afternoon session and another to cover the Wednesday session. Given the heavy demands faced by Brookies with golf, pickleball, cards, and Mah Jongg, the split tutoring schedule opens up a vast pool of new tutors to join in on the excitement this fall.
All the reading tutors live in SaddleBrooke where we carpool, back each other up, and keep things running smoothly. Our tutors work one-on-one in person with 2nd and 3rd graders each Monday and Wednesday afternoon to help improve their reading fluency and comprehension.
The plan is to expand this program in the fall to double the number of students we serve. So, if you’re looking for a meaningful way to contribute to our community, full- and half-time reading tutors and subs are encouraged to drop us a line at [email protected]. You’ll be glad you did!
