West Valley vape shop targeted in back-to-back smash and grabs, owner said

The thief allegedly stole about $400 in vapes and caused thousands of dollars in damage.

SURPRISE, Ariz. — A West Valley vape shop said it was recently targeted in back-to-back smash and grabs.

GK’s Vapor Pub owner Katie Birtel told 12News the thief allegedly got away both times and she’s worried they’ll strike again.

“Very frustrating. I feel helpless,” Birtel said.

Surveillance video from inside the shop near Bell Road and the Loop 303 showed a person throwing a rock into the window and crawling inside before throwing more than a dozen disposable vapes into a backpack.

Birtel said the product loss adds up to about $400, but replacing the broken glass door twice costs thousands of dollars.

Each time, the person allegedly took a variety of flavors and brands, leading Birtel to believe the person knew what they were looking for.

“I think he might be selling them to friends. That would be my guess because we’re 21 and over,” Birtel said.

The person’s identity is concealed by a mask, hoodie and gloves.

“You can’t tell anything because he was covered both times,” Birtel said. “I’m worried he’s going to come back.”

Birtel said she’s installing a fence to deter future break-ins.

“I’m sad we have to do that because I’ve always thought this neighborhood was really safe,” Birtel said.

Surprise police said a detective is working to determine whether the incidents are connected and identify any suspects.

No arrests have been made. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 623-222-TIPS (8477).
