For five decades, Desert Foothills Theater (DFT) has brought live performances to the north Valley, and its milestone 50th anniversary season is shining a spotlight on the past, present and future of community theater.
Founded in 1975 by Anne and Carl Nussbaum, the organization began with a simple goal: to make live theater accessible in the far north Scottsdale, Cave Creek and Carefree areas. Today, it continues that mission with a wide range of productions and educational programs serving all ages.
“I wonder if they’ll appreciate the theater?” Anne Nussbaum once said while helping establish the company.
“No need to wonder any longer. The answer is clear. This season, we celebrate those who have appreciated us since 1975,” said Producing Artistic Director Sandi Carll.
The 2025-26 season concludes April 16-19 with “STUNG!” at The Holland Center, a one-woman play by local playwright Andrea Markowitz. The production tells the story of Scottsdale con woman Sue Ellen Allen, blending humor and reflection as it explores justice, transformation and truth. A VIP performance April 16 will include refreshments and a post-show talkback with the playwright and lead actor.
Beyond the stage, DFT offers extensive educational opportunities, including youth classes, summer camps and partnerships with local schools. Adult workshops and community-based programs further expand its reach, creating opportunities for artistic growth at every age.
“DFT provides a place for community members to come together and engage in a common goal and interest, to work as a team and build something artistic and bigger than ourselves,” Carll said.
The celebration continues May 1 with a 50th Anniversary Party at the Sanderson Lincoln Pavilion in Carefree, featuring performances and alumni appearances spanning the theater’s history.
