The shooting occurred about 10:50 a.m. Saturday after two Chicago police officers transported an individual to Swedish Hospital for observation, Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said.
One of the officers, 38, was critically wounded and later pronounced dead. The other officer is 57 years old and is hospitalized, in critical condition, Snelling said.
The 38-year-old officer was a 10-year veteran of the department and the other officer is a 21-year veteran of the department. The identities of the officers haven’t been released.
A suspect is in custody and a weapon was recovered.

A spokesperson for Endeavor Health, which runs the hospital, said the hospital campus was closed due to the shooting.
They added the hospital was “not aware of any active threat within the hospital” and that patients and staff are safe.
