Every day, there are numerous opportunities to check out local and touring bands performing live around the Valley. Dive bars, midsize concert halls and arenas are among the spots where you can catch a concert. To help you make plans, here are some top-notch shows around town this weekend.
LSD and the Search for God
Friday, May 15, 8 p.m.
Walter Studios
LSD and the Search for God sound exactly like their name suggests. The cult-favorite shoegaze band deals in hazy guitars, buried vocals and distortion thick enough to disappear into. This is a show the sad-eyed set or anyone else into dreamy, feedback-drenched jams.
Defeated Sanity
Friday, May 15, 6 p.m.
The Rosetta Room
Defeated Sanity isn’t for the faint of heart. The long-running death-metal outfit specializes in grotesque riffs, brutal blastbeats and technical precision that borders on absurd. Their songs twist and pummel without mercy, turning every live set into a test of endurance for even the most seasoned metal fiends. Inferi, Organectomy, Horrific Visions and Desanguinate open.
Prince Daddy and the Hyena
Friday, May 15, 8 p.m.
The Rebel Lounge
Prince Daddy and the Hyena thrive on beautiful chaos. The New York punks mix emo confessionals, scrappy pop-punk and full-throttle freakouts into songs that constantly feel one step from falling apart. Their live shows are messy, loud and cathartic in all the right ways.
Who Want The Smoke feat. OhGeesy
Saturday, May 16, 7 p.m.
Desert Diamond Arena
West Coast rap takes over the West Valley this weekend when OhGeesy, Mike Sherm, Kalan.FrFr, 03 Greedo and Peysoh bring Who Want The Smoke to Desert Diamond Arena. Viral hits and party-starting energy fuel a lineup stacked with some of California rap’s hottest names right now. Oh, and Bhad Bhabie will apparently be there, too.
Poranguí
Saturday, May 16, 8 p.m.
Walter Where?House
Poranguí makes music that feels more like a ritual than a concert. Hence the multi-day experience the Arizona-based artist is bringing to Walter Where?House this weekend. Mixing electronic production with hypnotic tribal rhythms, Poranguí will host a sound-healing session and “Music Is Medicine” workshop on Sunday before a full-blown concert Saturday night.
Joan of Arkansas Final Show
Saturday, May 16, 9 p.m.
Yucca Tap Room
After five years together, Phoenix sludge-pop outfit Joan of Arkansas are flaming out in a blaze of glory. Citing personal commitments and other projects, the band lights up Yucca Tap this weekend with a free show and release party for their latest album, “Give Up the Ghost.” The Cause of Depression and Bugmaker open.
Justin Nozuka
Saturday, May 16, 5:30 p.m.
The Van Buren
Justin Nozuka crafts soulful folk-pop hits that carry a lot of emotional weight, a formula that’s proven popular with his millions of fans. The Canadian-born artist’s Phoenix stop on his tour this weekend is officially sold out, but resale tickets are still floating around online for anyone looking to sneak in last-minute.
Electric Six
Sunday, May 17, 8 p.m.
The Rebel Lounge
Electric Six are still best known for early-2000s viral hits like “Gay Bar” and “Danger! High Voltage,” both fueled by absurdist humor and gloriously over-the-top videos. Those tracks marked the peak of the band’s commercial success, but not its creativity. In the decades since, the Detroit weirdos have cranked out more than a dozen albums, including 2023’s “Turquoise,” with just as much warped fun as ever.
Nettspend
Sunday, May 17, 9 p.m.
Marquee Theatre
Nettspend has become one of underground rap’s fastest-rising names, turning blown-out beats, internet-fueled buzz and unruly live energy into career success. He plays the Marquee Theatre on his Early Life Crisis Tour this weekend, and while the show is officially sold out, tickets are available through resellers.
The Black Queen
Sunday, May 17, 7:30 p.m.
Last Exit Live
The Black Queen keep things dark, sleek and drenched in synth. Fronted by Greg Puciato of The Dillinger Escape Plan, the band leans hard into industrial textures, shadowy pop and moody electronics to create seductive and slightly sinister. Local acts There Is No Us and More Ephemerol provide support.
