1 dead after police shooting near downtown Phoenix, police say



Police are investigating a fatal incident near 7th Avenue and McDowell Road. The situation had involved another matter investigated by Tolleson police.

PHOENIX — The Phoenix Police Department is investigating a critical incident near downtown Phoenix on Wednesday morning that resulted in a fatality.

The incident is being investigated in a parking lot near 7th Avenue and McDowell Road.

Tolleson police said their officers located a man with two felony warrants near 93rd Avenue and Baden Street. Officers followed the suspect in his car to 87th Avenue and Earll Drive. 

The car was later found abandoned at this location and the suspect was located in a residential driveway. 

The suspect allegedly showed a handgun to the officers and ran away. Both Tolleson and Phoenix police assisted in finding the suspect. 

Later in the day, police were involved in the critical incident near 7th Avenue and McDowell Road when officers identified the man wanted by Tolleson police. As the man was walking in an alleyway, he allegedly pointed a firearm at officers, resulting in the man being shot by police.

Police said the man was taken to a hospital and he did not survive his injuries. His identity has not been disclosed. 

No officers were injured.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety will be investigating the incident.

Expect traffic delays if you are going to be in the area, police said.
