WILLCOX, Ariz. (KVOA) – Willcox police are searching for a suspect in a deadly shooting that left one person dead and another in critical condition.
Officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 500 block of South Curtis Avenue around 9:30 p.m. on March 31. When they arrived, they learned one victim had already been taken to the hospital by an unknown person.
Officers found a second victim at the scene who was deceased. The surviving victim was initially taken to a local hospital and later flown to another medical facility for a higher level of care.
The victim is currently listed in critical condition.
Detectives developed probable cause and identified a person believed to be directly involved in the homicide. In coordination with the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office and the Arizona Department of Public Safety, search warrants were served at a residence in Cochise County.
Evidence was recovered, but the suspect had fled the area before law enforcement arrived. Investigators have determined there is no active threat to the public.
The Willcox Police Department is not publicly identifying the suspect prior to formal charging and custody, citing recent court decisions affirming that premature release of suspect names can violate due process rights. The victims’ identities are being withheld pending notification of next of kin and until the suspect is taken into custody.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Detective Callahan English at 520-384-4673. The Willcox Police Department asks the public to avoid the area as investigators continue their work.
