University of Arizona chooses to not agree with White House compact | Top Stories

TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) – University of Arizona President Suresh Garimella shared insights on the university’s involvement with the U.S. Department of Education’s Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education proposal.

The university was one of nine selected to provide feedback on the proposal, which has sparked significant discussion both locally and nationally. Garimella emphasized the importance of engaging in dialogue rather than simply providing a written response.

“A number of the proposed federal recommendations deserve thoughtful consideration,” Garimella said. He noted that many ideas from the proposal are already implemented at the university.

However, Garimella stressed the importance of preserving academic freedom, merit-based research funding, and institutional independence.

“Principles like academic freedom, merit-based research funding, and institutional independence are foundational and must be preserved,” Garimella said.

He stated that the university has submitted a Statement of Principles to the Department of Education instead of agreeing to the draft terms.

“This response is our contribution toward a national conversation about the future relationship between universities and the federal government,” Garimella said.

Garimella encouraged the campus community to review the response letter and the Statement of Principles, which reflect feedback from various stakeholders.

“It is critical for the University of Arizona to take an active role in this discussion and to work toward maintaining a strong relationship with the federal government while staying true to our principles,” Garimella said.

The university aims to maintain a strong relationship with the federal government while upholding its foundational values. Garimella underscored the need for collaboration with other institutions, government officials and the community to strengthen higher education.

“We will continue to collaborate with other higher education institutions and associations, as well as with our community, Gov. Katie Hobbs, our state legislature, Congress, and the administration,” Garimella said. “Strengthening higher education and reaffirming the values that make the University of Arizona one of the country’s preeminent educational and research institutions requires that we all work together,” Garimella said.
