Tucson to unite against Santa Rita mining threat at Saturday rally | News

TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) – Residents and advocates are preparing to gather for the Rally for the Santa Ritas on Saturday, May 3, 2025, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Tucson Federal Building. The event aims to unite the community against the Copper World mining project and the perceived threats posed by the mining industry in Arizona.

Key figures such as Adelita Grijalva, Regina Romero, and Kevin Dahl will speak at the rally. Russ McSpadden and Rob Peters, representing environmental organizations, will also address attendees.

The Copper World project, proposed by Hudbay, a Canadian company, involves developing six open pits in the Santa Rita Mountains, posing risks to water resources and local landscapes. Rally organizers urge elected officials to oppose the project to safeguard the environment for future generations.

The event is organized by Save the Scenic Santa Ritas, the Center for Biological Diversity, and other local groups. The movement seeks to protect Southern Arizona’s unique natural beauty.
