PIMA COUNTY, Ariz. (KVOA) — Five Pima County area schools at some point Friday had threats against its students causing many parents to panic.
Three of those schools did not have any serious threats but two of them did, leading to two arrests.
“Well I wasn’t surprised. There’s a lot of copy cats,” said Rich Cooley, a Tucson resident.
“When you (the news) cover(s) it, I think it leads to copy cats,” said an anonymous man.
Some Tucsonans are becoming numb to threats made against schools amid the rising number of mass shootings across the country.
On friday – deputies say two minors made separate threats against Orange Grove Middle School and Los Ninos Elementary School.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department says both of the threats were spread on social media.
“A lot of them think they can get away with it because they don’t think they’ll get caught,” Cooley said.
But they did, deputies say the kid who threatened Los Ninos Elementary School apparently made light of an incident at the school when a boy brought an unloaded gun to school Wednesday.
The sheriff’s department says the minor was arrested for posting a weapon online and saying they would come to the school.
“I think there needs to be consequence for their action and I think when there’s no consequence it just leads to actions that become escalated,” said an unidentified Tucson resident.
Sheriff Chris Nanos agrees with that statement and says parents need to make sure this does not happen.
“We need to do more with our parents because they too have a role in this. Stay engaged with your child in a manner that allows them to be engaged with their child on social media and get more involved if they can,” Nanos said.
A proposal for a solution.
“Monitor their social media and monitor them,” said an anonymous man.
“There’s a lot of good with what’s out there but there’s also a lot of craziness,” Cooley said.
Andrada High School was one of the five schools that got a threat Friday, but Tucson police says that threat was not credible and it originated from a post in Georgia.
The sheriff’s department did not mention what other two schools were threatened.
