DOUGLAS, Ariz. (KVOA) — A normally quiet street in Douglas was shaken up this past weekend when police say a woman allegedly ran over her boyfriend, killing him.
A normally quiet street in Douglas was shaken up this past weekend when police say a woman allegedly ran over her boyfriend, killing him.
Neighbors say the couple only lived together at a house on 13th street for least 4 months and seemed like nice people.
They tell News 4 Tucson they would have never thought one of them would end up dead.
23-year-old Karen Molina is behind bars at the Cochise County Jail for what Douglas police say was a domestic violence situation gone wrong.
In the end, Molina’s 37-year-old boyfriend died.
“It was pretty shocking because it’s pretty calm here to be honest,” said a Douglas resident.
“This poor child is now behind bars,” said another Douglas resident.
No one that News 4 Tucson spoke with wanted to be on camera.
Douglas police say sometime before 2 a.m. Sunday on 13th street, Molina and her boyfriend Alejandro Bernal were fighting inside their home.
The fight would continue outside, but police say Molina got in a car and tried to drive away.
As the car was moving officers say Bernal tried to get inside the car but he ended getting hit instead.
The three white markings that are visible on the road are where neighbors say his body was found when police showed up.
“They had just moved in. They seemed pretty calm, we wouldn’t hear nothing crazy either,” a Douglas resident said.
This woman lives close to where the couple lived and apparently they weren’t the only ones who lived here.
“It’s sad,” the resident said.
“She has children?” asked a News 4 Tucson reporter.
“Yeah she has two, I believe it’s two of them.”
This case is giving another spotlight to domestic violence.
This Douglas woman says she has been in one herself.
“It’s nerve wrecking. It’s scary, it’s sad. It’s never worth it,” the woman said.
“It’s sad because tragedies like this happen, cause (Bernal) he did have a life, regardless of what he was doing,” said a Douglas resident.
Molina is charged with negligent homicide and domestic violence aggravated assault.
