Sunnyside Boys Soccer shuts out Salpointe Catholic to advance to Open Division Quarterfinals | News

TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) – Sunnyside Boys Soccer beat rival Salpointe Catholic 3-0 in the second round of the inaugural Open Division playoffs.

The Blue Devils avenged their loss to Lancers from earlier in the season and advanced to the Open Division Quarterfinals.

Sunnyside seniors Angel Bracamontes Pulido and Dieggo Resendiz put the Blue Devils up 2-0 at the half. Fellow senior Johan Jimenez tacked on a goal in the 57th minute.

Sunnyside and Salpointe have played a lot of great games over the years, but never in the playoffs. The Blue Devils are in 6A, while the Lancers are in 4A. That changed with the creation of the Open Division in soccer.

Sunnyside will play top-seed Pinnacle next Wednesday. Salpointe Catholic drops down to the 4A bracket, where it’ll play for its 5th-straight state title.
