TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) — Sun Tran’s Route 22 may soon be discontinued, and community members are voicing their concerns. Sun Tran has proposed cutting Route 22, but before the Tucson City Council makes a decision, public meetings are scheduled to gather community feedback.
Riders of Route 22 gathered at the El Rio Neighborhood Center for the first of eight community input meetings Tuesday night. Many attendees expressed their desire to keep the route operational.
“I’m very concerned. So many cuts have already been made over to this westside area with bus service and now they want to cut even more service,” said Elvia, a Sun Tran rider.
The route currently operates from the Ronstadt Transit Center to the El Rio Golf Course. Sun Tran officials said the route is one of the lower-performing ones after evaluating current operations.
“If it does go through there are other options depending on where you are catching the route. You might be able to walk to another route or you can use the Sun On Demand service that will allow you to either make your complete trip in the area or you can transfer to another route,” said Davita Mueller, Sun Tran Director of Service Planning and Development.
Many riders, however, are not convinced by the alternatives. They expressed concerns about current wait times and the potential impact of losing Route 22.
“It would be two hours to get the shuttle to come home. So how are they going to replace that?” said Elvia.
If it does get approved by Mayor and Council, route 22 will be discontinued on February 15, 2026.
