Happy, Happy New Year! Have you noticed that some years seem to zoom past quickly and others tend to drag on? I’m trying not to let the days go by without noticing and appreciating them. I think I do that best when I am living in the moment.
One of the ways I do this is choosing a word at the beginning of each year. These words are sometimes referred to as Star Words. Star Words are connected to Epiphany, the day we celebrate the Magi who followed the star to Jesus. Epiphany marks the end of the 12 days of Christmas and is always on Tuesday, January 6. This year, Vista de la Montaña United Methodist Church will celebrate Epiphany on Sunday January 4th when we will offer a Star Word to attendees. Just as the Magi followed a star long ago, we too can be guided by our Star Word for the coming year. This past year, like most years, I kept my Star Word on my desk and pondered what it meant for me. One day when I was sharing with a friend that I felt like I was learning to begin again—I remembered that my Star Word for the year was “return” and indeed I was learning to return to my true self and returning to listen more deeply to the Spirit’s voice. If you would like to receive a Star Word, either join us for worship on Sunday, January 4, or call the church office at (520) 825-1985 and the receptionist will gladly give you your own personal word for the year.
And then on Sunday, January 11, Sunday, January 18 and Sunday, January 25, we will be exploring some Common Sayings Not Found in the Bible (“Everything Happens for a Reason”, “God Won’t Give You More Than You Can Handle”, “God Helps Those Who Help Themselves”.) These common sayings sound Christian but are not found in the Bible. They may have an element of truth, yet they miss the point and in fact may hinder you experiencing God’s grace.
We’d love to have you to join us for our Sunday Service at 10 a.m., each week. Vista de la Montaña United Methodist Church is located at 3001 E Miravista Lane, on the west side of Oracle Road, just south of the Golder Ranch intersection.
