TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) – As the Fourth of July holiday approaches, a record number of Arizonans have already hit the road, creating bustling traffic conditions in and around Tucson.
According to AAA, more than 1.5 million Arizonans are expected to travel domestically for the holiday, with a slight increase in those choosing to drive rather than fly compared to last year.
Jana Revell shared her plans for the holiday, saying, “I’m going to Flagstaff to do some mountain biking and some camping and to get out of the heat for the weekend.”
John Myers said, “I’m going up to Sierra Vista to visit some family friends.”
Another Tucson resident said, “Just heading to a lake south to do some fishing.”
AAA projects that the increase in road travel is partially due to lower gas prices.
Myers mentioned the cost difference, saying, “I’m coming from Phoenix where it’s $3.59 a gallon and I’m stopping here to gas up where it’s $2.77 a gallon.”
AAA advises avoiding peak traffic hours, which are expected to be between noon and 8 p.m. in the coming days.
