TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) – In a possibly significant development in the search for 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, investigators have recovered a pair of black gloves as law enforcement expands its search efforts.
Guthrie was abducted from her Catalina Foothills home more than a week ago, prompting an intense investigation. Investigators have confirmed to News 4 Tucson that a search of the area was extended and a pair of black gloves were located. The gloves have been submitted for DNA analysis.
As part of the ongoing effort to bring Guthrie home, Ring doorbell camera users in the Foothills are being told that investigators are requesting footage from Jan. 11 between 9 p.m. and midnight. There’s also footage of interest from the morning of Jan. 31 between 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. as there was reportedly a suspicious vehicle on Via Entrada around 10 a.m.
Homeowners in the Foothills are urged to check their footage before it is overwritten.
Sources say several hundred law enforcement personnel, including FBI officials, are on the ground in Tucson. Wednesday, the FBI conducted what the bureau described as “extensive” searches.
The community is deeply concerned about Guthrie’s disappearance.
“We are very worried. The neighbors are all worried, and we do not know who this kidnapper is, what he’s done with Nancy Guthrie. We don’t know what’s going on, so we’re really concerned,” Marla Handler, a neighbor, said.
Efforts to locate Guthrie have extended into other counties, with a search executed Tuesday night in Rio Rico.
Carlos Palazuelos, a man who said he was detained and questioned for nearly eight hours, said he was unaware of Guthrie before the questioning.
“Anonymous tip, that’s what they said . . . that’s what they told my mother-in-law they showed her a video . . . because they thought my eyes and eyelashes looked the same,” Palazuelos said.
Palazuelos referred to video and pictures released the day before, showing a masked individual wearing gloves and tampering with Guthrie’s doorbell camera on the morning of Feb. 1, the same day she was reported missing.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department reports receiving more than 4,000 calls in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of calls on the Guthrie case to nearly 18,000.
The FBI continues to request the public’s assistance in identifying the person seen in the video. The FBI hotline is 1-800-CALL-FBI.
