Plans for a new Tucson sports complex | Local News

TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) – A groundbreaking sports complex tailored for children and adults with special needs is being planned in Tucson. Able AllStars is spearheading this project, aiming to build a multi-use outdoor court facility designed specifically for individuals with balance and movement disorders. This initiative was inspired by a simple game of catch.

Ted Drake, founder of Able AllStars, shared his journey, which began with a personal challenge. Like many parents raising a child with autism, he struggled to find a suitable recreational space for his daughter, Madison.

Drake decided to create a prototype court in his backyard. Witnessing the joy it brought Madison, he recognized the broader potential of his idea.

“This started out as a project to help a child who is autistic. On the autism spectrum,” said Drake. “But it quickly became a project that can help a lot more people than just those on the autism spectrum. Really anybody with mobility needs because what we designed is a ballcourt that will help with balance and movement. This is for users with Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, veterans with orthopedic sports recovery injuries,” Drake said.

The planned facility will feature target walls and reactive training light stations aimed at improving balance and movement. It will also include pickleball courts with additional space for rest and walls designed for those sensitive to loud repetitive sounds.

Able AllStars is seeking community donations to complete the project. Contributions will support the acquisition of more sporting equipment and recreational resources.
