Pima County approves initiative that pushes for safety on the Loop | Local News

TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) – The Pima County Board of Supervisors has approved the One Pima Initiative, introduced by District 5 Supervisor Andrés Cano, with a 4-1 vote. This initiative aims to tackle issues such as addiction, housing instability, and public safety along the Chuck Huckelberry Loop and County washes, according to a press release.

“I am grateful to my Board colleagues for supporting the One Pima Initiative,” Cano said. “The challenges we face—addiction, housing instability, and public safety concerns along the Loop and in County washes—require us to act with urgency and unity.”

The One Pima Initiative will clean up the Loop, enhance safety measures, expand treatment and recovery options, and bolster the County’s response to the opioid crisis. It will also support increased shelter capacity and emergency housing.

Key actions include allocating $750,000 for Loop clean-up and launching a safety plan with improved lighting and emergency systems by April 2026. It will also expand treatment and diversion programs and create a new Sobering Alternative for Recovery (SAFR) Center.

The initiative is funded through existing budget allocations, state and federal grants, and opioid settlement dollars, without introducing new taxes or affecting current programs.
