New UA institute tackles national security research in Tucson | Local News

TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) – The University of Arizona has launched the Kyl Institute for National Security, aiming to transform research breakthroughs into practical solutions that protect national interests and support armed services personnel, according to a news release.

The institute is named after former U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl, a University of Arizona alumnus who served Arizona in Congress for 26 years. The Kyl Institute replaces the U of A Applied Research Corporation, which began in 2018 to foster partnerships in national security and defense research.

“The Kyl Institute for National Security provides the focused capacity for the University of Arizona to advance technologies and bring forward talent that elevate capability and create advantages for our federal and defense partners, as well as those in uniform,” University of Arizona President Suresh Garimella said. “I am proud this transformative institute is named in honor of Senator Kyl.”

Kyl expressed his gratitude for the honor, highlighting the university’s role in addressing national security challenges. “The University of Arizona played an important role in my life,” Kyl said. “It’s especially meaningful to see the university applying its research strengths in partnership with government and the private sector to address real-world national security challenges.”

Tomás Díaz de la Rubia, board chair of the Kyl Institute, emphasized the importance of staying ahead of rapid geopolitical changes. “The University of Arizona is committed to helping our partners stay ahead of these changes,” he said. The institute will leverage research in areas such as space science, optical sciences and hypersonics to enhance national security.

The Arizona Board of Regents is partially funding the institute, which aims to unite academia, industry and defense efforts. Regent Cecilia Mata stated, “With the Kyl Institute for National Security, the University of Arizona is uniting world-class expertise with mission urgency.”

Retired U.S. Air Force Gen. Robin Rand has been appointed president and CEO of the Kyl Institute. Rand’s extensive military career and leadership roles position him to guide the institute’s mission. “These steps position the institute to expand its role as a trusted platform for accelerated collaboration,” Rand said.

The Kyl Institute will serve as a hub for integrating education and research, focusing on emerging threats to national security. The university’s expertise in space technology and optics will play a crucial role in developing solutions for both civilian and defense applications.
