Man crossing street struck, killed

A 39-year-old man was struck and killed Monday night while crossing the street in the city’s south side, Tucson police say.

The crash happened just after 7 p.m. when Emilio Hoyos was crossing East 22nd Street near South Fourth Avenue outside of a crosswalk, Tucson police said in a news release. A marked crosswalk was about 160 feet away, the release said.

Hoyos died later at the hospital.

The unidentified 36-year-old driver stayed at the crash scene. Investigators say he was driving about 35 mph in a stretch of 22nd Street where the speed limit is 30 mph.

Hoyos being in the roadway was the “major contributing factor” in the crash, the release said. The investigation continues.

There have been 32 pedestrian fatalities in Tucson so far this year. That’s one less than at the same time last year, Tucson police say.
