The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is investigating after construction workers discovered human remains near a Marana neighborhood. The remains were found during a road widening project near Silverbell and Twin Peaks Roads.

The Twin Peaks Road widening project, initially scheduled for completion by August 3, 2025, is now delayed, according to the Town of Marana. Some residents were surprised by the discovery of human remains in the area.

“I pray for the families or whoever is the family of that body,” said Gail Cameron, a Marana resident.

The remains were found Thursday near the “Sunflower Community,” close to Silverbell and Twin Peaks Roads. It’s a community for senior citizens, filled with over 900 homes, according to the community’s website.

Silverbell Road north of Twin Peaks Road has been closed since May 22 for construction, but work is currently suspended due to the discovery.

“During the course of excavation crews notified that they found possible human remains,” said Angelica Carrillo, a spokeswoman for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies are on the scene examining the remains. The area, once private land, was recently purchased by the Town of Marana.

“The remains have been here for awhile well over 20 years,” Carrillo said.

While authorities investigate how the remains ended up at the site, construction is halted. The delay means the area could see increased traffic after Twin Peaks K-8 has its first day of school on August 4.

“It seems like it’s just an ongoing thing,” Cameron said.

The Town of Marana was unable to provide an interview, and it remains unclear how long the construction will be suspended near Silverbell and Twin Peaks Roads.
