TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) – The deadline to obtain your Arizona Travel ID is fast approaching, with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) set to require a REAL ID compliant form of identification for domestic flights starting Wednesday, May 7.
If you haven’t secured yours yet, there’s an interesting feature many might not know about. By shining a blacklight on the new design of the Arizona Travel ID, a howling coyote and “Arizona” appear on one side, while a scorpion under a starry night and “The Grand Canyon State” are visible on the other.
These images aren’t just for show. They are part of the updated security features rolled out with the new card design in March 2023 to prevent fraudulent duplication.
Other features include a 100% polycarbonate material, laser-engraved information, and images of Arizona’s diverse terrain. The card’s slightly raised surface further reduces the chance of tampering.
For those who still need to get their Travel ID, it is recommended to schedule an appointment online at azmvdnow.gov to save time. Walk-ins are also accepted at MVD offices.
Remember, if you don’t have immediate travel plans, there’s no rush to meet the May 7 deadline. However, the card takes approximately two weeks to arrive, so plan ahead if you’re flying later in 2025.
To obtain the Travel ID, you must provide extra documentation, such as a birth certificate, Social Security number, and proof of residency. More information is available at azdot.gov/TravelID.
