Fort Huachuca among army installations dropping ceremonial horses | News

WASHINGTON, D.C. (KVOA) – The U.S. Army announced a significant change on Tuesday, as it plans to phase out most of its ceremonial cavalry units, moving towards a future without ceremonial horses. One of those units to close is at Fort Huachuca in Cochise County.

According to a report from the Associated Press, the Army will continue operating the Old Guard ceremonial caisson units at Joint Base San Antonio and Arlington National Cemetery for burial honors.

But along with Fort Huachuca, units will close at Fort Carson in Colorado, Fort Sill in Oklahoma, Fort Irwin in California, and Fort Riley in Kansas, according to an army spokesman.

The Army estimates saving about $2 million a year by closing these units. They add that some horses might be donated to organizations, but none will be sold.
