A 75-year-old bicyclist died days after being struck by a vehicle on Tucson’s east side, police said.
Steven Raynor Bye died July 7 from injuries he sustained in a crash on June 25 near East Old Vail and South Rita roads, Tucson police said in a news release.
In the crash, Bye was riding west on the paved shoulder of Old Vail about 8:30 p.m. A driver of a Toyota Rav4 merged from the curb lane to the median as he approached the cyclist, police said. At that point, Bye turned directly into the path the Toyota, said police, citing camera footage, roadway evidence and witness interviews.
The unidentified driver, a 34-year-old man, stopped immediately and cooperated with the investigation. He was not injured.
Bye initially improved at the hospital, but investigators were later told he’d died from his injuries.
