TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) — Attorney General Kris Mayes is sending her condolences after learning Mesa Attorney and Latino civil rights advocate Phillip Austin has died at 73-years old.
Austin’s family confirmed he died peacefully in his sleep according to an Instagram post by his daughter, State Representative Lorena Austin, on December 22nd.
Austin spent nearly 20 years in the Attorney General’s Office and was credited with inspiring more Latinos and Hispanics to represent their communities in local government.
In a post published on X on Monday, Mayes said in part:
“Sad to hear about the recent passing of Phil Austin, a dedicated public servant who spent decades serving our state in the civil rights division of the Attorney General’s Office. Arizona is a better place because of Phil. May he rest in peace.”
