Arizona’s Caleb Love, KJ Lewis strike up competition at bowling alley in spare time | News

TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) – Caleb Love and KJ Lewis have been backcourt stars for two seasons.

In order to get to know them off the court, you have to take a trip to the bowling alley. That’s where they’re striking up competition in their spare time.

It started last summer.

Arizona Men’s Basketball’s Caleb Love, KJ Lewis and walk-on Jackson Cook picked up a new hobby during the offseason: bowling.

“After we got done working out in our free time, we found a little hobby to get away from basketball,” Lewis said.

“It became routine at that point,” Love said.

Love, Lewis and walk-on Jackson Cook bowled four to five times a week.

“I think it’s like shooting, really,” Love said. “You have to follow through with your wrist. It’s soothing to see a strike go down. It’s just like a swish.”

All that practice has made them pretty good…

“My high score is 233,” Love said.

“Mine is 213 or 214,” Lewis added.

It can get intense.

“We’re all brothers, we’re all competitors,” Lewis said. “We’re going to talk a little smack here and there.”

So who’s the better bowler?

“The competitor in me is going to say me for sure,” Love said with a smile.

“The competitor in me is going to say me,” Lewis replied. “I’m not going to lie I do give him his props. The way I bowl now is because of him.”

“He used to bowl straight,” Love said. “Now he has the spin and curve to it. I think it’s a better way to get strikes.”

Whether they bowl a strike, spare or split, Love said their tradition is special.

“We definitely fell in love with it,” Love said. “Anything we do, whether it’s basketball, bowling, UNO, we’re going to compete. But we’re going to have fun with it.”
