Arizona Baseball sent its seniors out with a win in its home finale. The Wildcats beat Utah 8-7, avoiding a series sweep by the Utes

Arizona sits in a tie for 5th with Kansas State in the Big 12 Standings with one weekend to go. The Wildcats sit one game behind Kansas and TCU. They’re still in the race for a top-four seed and first-round bye in the Big 12 Tournament.

Arizona recorded 16 hits in the win, with multiple hits from Maddox Mihalakis (4-4), Brendan Summerhill (3-5), Mason White (3-4), Adonys Guzman (2-3), Andrew Cain (2-5) and Easton Breyfogle (2-4).

Summerhill opened up the scoring with a two-run double in the second inning.

White added to that with a two-run homer in the 4th. The Salpointe Catholic Grad has 41 career home runs, two shy of a tie for second in program history.

Utah scored three runs in the fifth and Drake Digiorno homered in the 6th to tie the game at four. Arizona regained a 5-4 on a wild pitch in the bottom of the frame.

Every time the Wildcats scored, the Utes seemingly had an answer. Arizona took a 7-5 lead in the 7th off a RBI double from Mihalakis. Utah’s Digiorno tied it with his second home run of the day, a two-run blast to left field.

Breyfogle scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the 8th off a single up the middle.

Starting pitcher Smith Bailey issued one of his best outings of the season, working six innings and allowing four runs on six hits while striking out six. The freshman didn’t factor into the decision. Tony Pluta earned the win after pitching the final two innings. He gave up no runs and no hits while striking out two.

Arizona will play its regular season finale at Houston starting Thursday, May 15.
