Worker’s body recovered from Goodyear trench

A worker died after becoming trapped inside a trench at a west Valley construction site.

What we know:

According to statements from Goodyear Fire, rescue crews arrived in the area of 183rd Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road at around 1:10 p.m., following reports that a construction worker was trapped in a trench.

When crews got to the scene, they found construction workers trying to rescue their coworker who was buried under a large amount of dirt.

“Fire crews joined the effort but were unable to safely extricate the individual due to the volume of material and unstable conditions within the trench,” the department said.

As crews removed dirt, the trench continued to collapse. After 30 minutes, the operation was transitioned from a rescue to a recovery.

At around 2 a.m. on July 29, the worker’s body was removed from the trench.

What we don’t know:

The worker wasn’t identified. Firefighters did not say how the worker got into the trench.

“The Goodyear Fire Department and Goodyear Police Department would like to extend their deepest condolences to the worker’s family, friends, and coworkers during this difficult time,” officials said.

What’s next:

The incident remains under investigation.
