PHOENIX — Monsoon moisture dries up for the start of the week as high-pressure returns this week.
For Labor Day the Valley stays dry with plenty of sunshine our afternoon temperatures are expected to reach 108 degrees.
For Monday the monsoon action will stay in the higher terrain across northern and eastern Arizona. After that much drier conditions are expected for the rest of the week.
With high pressure overhead afternoon temperatures will peak by mid-week, going over 110 degrees for several days.
An Excessive Heat Watch has been issued for Wednesday through Friday for Metro Phoenix as well as the lower deserts of central, western and southern Arizona.
This means Wednesday through Friday will be ABC 15 Weather Action Days as afternoon temperatures will be between 108-114 degrees each day. You may want to change your outdoor plans with this heat.
Now is the time to prepare yourself and your family for this extreme heat. Limit your time outdoors between 11 am and 6 pm, seek A/C, use sunblock and stay hydrated, drink plenty of water.
Phoenix could top at or above 110 degrees again next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. We’ve already had 54 days so far this year at 110 degrees or hotter. The all-time record is 55 days set just last year and there is a good chance that we may break that record by the middle to end of next week.
There is also no end in sight to this record-setting stretch of triple-digit days. As of Sunday, we’ve had 98 triple-digit days in a row. The previous record was 76 consecutive triple-digit days set in August of 1993.
Meteorological summer ends on August 31st and this will go down as the hottest summer on record in Phoenix! Currently, the overall average temperature for June, July and August has been 98.7 degrees. This number will change very slightly when we get the final tally on Sunday morning, but it stands to break last summer’s record of 97.0 degrees.
