A storm is headed towards the Valley. Here is when the Valley can expect some rain.

BIG weather change on the way! 12News weather team calls for a Weather Impact Alert Day as a storm rolls into the Valley.

PHOENIX, Arizona — The 12News weather team has designated Monday afternoon/evening as a Weather Impact Alert Day as we’re tracking a storm system set to bring a significant, short-term change in the weather to the Phoenix area.

This system is currently lagging over Baja California, but will be on the move Monday, spinning in showers and a few thunderstorms across southern and central Arizona. Timing for the Valley will be any time after noon to 3 p.m. on Monday through the evening hours.  With sufficient cold air high in the sky, we could even see some small hail out of any thunderstorm that develops.

Rain totals for the Phoenix area will generally be in the .01″ to .20″ range, with much of that variability depending on isolated heavier rain showers that will move through Monday evening.

Whatever we end up receiving, it won’t make an appreciable dent in our rainfall deficit: Phoenix has only measured .26″ of rain since the first of the year. That’s only 13% of normal (1.98″) through the first week of March.

As this system clears out on Tuesday, we’ll see the coolest day of the week (and perhaps for a while) with Tuesday temperatures holding in the 70s.

Then, a BIG warm-up is in store for late next week with highs returning to the mid 90s by Friday and beyond.
