GILBERT, Ariz. — An 88-year-old woman is dead after a vehicle hit the building she was in, according to authorities.
The Gilbert Police Department said the crash happened on Jan. 10 at 9:55 p.m. at a building near Guadalupe and Lindsay roads, which is nearby an assisted living and memory care facility. Police did not say the specific building that was hit.

The driver, 33-year-old Joshua Degolier, fled the scene but was later tracked down and arrested, police said.
The woman who was killed was later identified as 88-year-old Mary Haapala, police said.
“We are saddened by this tragic loss of life and extend our deepest condolences to her friends, family, and loved ones,” Gilbert police said in a news release.
Police said impairment may have been a factor in the crash, according to their preliminary investigation.
Police said Degolier is facing charges of second-degree murder, failing to remain at the scene of an accident involving death or serious physical injury, and failing to render aid to a person involved in a collision.
