What may have been intended as a prank is being described by neighbors as dangerous and reckless behavior that could have had far more serious consequences.
According to residents, the incidents began shortly after 1 a.m., when several homeowners were jolted awake by loud popping noises that sounded like gunfire striking their homes.
Surveillance video captured at one property shows three teenage boys running down a street before one raises what appears to be a BB gun and fires at a parked pickup truck, shattering its rear driver-side window.
“Somebody was just going around causing trouble,” said Damian Lujan, who discovered damage to his own truck a street down. A pellet was found in the bed of his vehicle, and the rear window had been blown out.
Lujan warned that the teens’ actions could have led to serious consequences.
“Most homeowners are armed, so that’s not safe for you guys to just be running around doing things like that,” he said. “Either you’re going to get hurt, you’re going to get caught, mess up your whole future over one night of having fun.”
Several neighbors reported similar damage. One home two doors down also had a vehicle window shot out, while others reported pellets striking their houses.
Stephanie Hill said she was awakened by the sound of a pellet hitting her bedroom window.
“You wake up and you’re like, was that a bird that hit my window? What was that?” Hill questioned.
A pellet was later found in a walkway behind her home, which she believes came from the same group. Hill, who says she suffers from PTSD, described the incident as especially distressing.
“It’s scary. I didn’t sleep the rest of that night, and I didn’t sleep again last night,” she said. “You don’t know, and ask yourself, are they coming back? Are they going to do worse?”
The incidents also prompted some residents to fear a possible break-in. Dave Sobel said a loud impact against his bedroom window caused him to grab his firearm, believing someone was trying to enter his home.
“The adrenaline starts pumping, of course, because it’s a loud noise at the window right above my head,” Sobel said. “You’re thinking that somebody’s trying to get in. It’s very startling.”
Sobel added that the teens may not have realized the danger they were putting themselves in. Pointing a black BB gun at someone’s property can give the appear that they are using a real gun.
“This kid is definitely putting himself in danger. And honestly, I think if the kid’s parents know that this is going on, they should probably take that BB gun away,” Sobel said. “They need to do something to put it in that kid’s head that he should not be doing that anymore because it’s not safe.”
Residents say they were contacted by Surprise police Sunday morning, as officers went door-to-door collecting reports and assessing how widespread the damage may be.
Police have not yet released additional details about the investigation, and it remains unclear how many homes or vehicles were targeted.
For neighbors in Sierra Montana, the message is clear: what may seem like a harmless prank has crossed a line.
