The 32-year-old suspect was arrested on Christmas Eve in Anthem.
ANTHEM, Ariz. — A Phoenix mother has been arrested for driving at incredibly high speeds while intoxicated and her young daughter in the back seat.
According to arrest documents, 32-year-old Ariel Olson was driving south on I-17 near Anthem on Christmas Eve when an officer caught her going 113 miles per hour. Olson was pulled over by the officer, who claimed he could smell alcohol coming from her breath. Olson reportedly told the officer she had a drink about two hours before she started driving. Documents claim Olson was stumbling as she got out of the car and performed field sobriety tests.
The document also claimed that Olson’s eight-year-old daughter was in the back seat while she was driving. Olson was arrested for aggravated DUI with a passenger under 15 years old.
Valley attorney Anthony Ramirez, who is also on the advisory board for MADD Arizona, said it’s possible she could face additional charges.
“I would argue that a driving DUI with a child in the car could also be potentially reckless endangerment,” Anthony said.
Ramirez said Arizona is one of the harshest states in the nation when it comes to penalties related to driving under the influence, with increased enforcement during the holidays. Last December, there were 1,354 arrests for DUI, according to the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.
