The suspect was arrested on 18 counts of attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer, among other charges.
PHOENIX — A suspect has been arrested on multiple charges related to a shootout on Thursday night in central Phoenix that injured four Arizona DPS troopers, according to officials.
Around 7 p.m., DPS SWAT personnel were serving a high-risk search warrant at a residence near I-17 and West Indian School Road.
The suspect, 51-year-old Darrelle Bell, was wanted on a felony grand jury warrant for weapons misconduct and drug possession.
As SWAT prepared to enter the residence, two people outside let Bell know that law enforcement arrived, DPS said.
That is when Bell started shooting at troopers, who fired back, officials said.
Bell was hit with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and was treated at the hospital.
Officials said a DPS SWAT sergeant sustained a gunshot wound to the shoulder and wound to his arm. Three other SWAT members were injured by shrapnel. All four were treated at the hospital for their injuries and have since been released.
DPS extended its gratitude to the Phoenix Police Department, Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office and emergency personnel for helping its troopers at the scene.
Bell has been booked into the Maricopa County jail on the following charges:
- Attempted First Degree Murder of a Law Enforcement Officer, 18 counts – A.R.S. § 13-1105(A)(3)
- Possession of Weapon by a Prohibited Person, 3 counts – A.R.S. § 13-3102(A)(4)
- Discharging a Firearm in City Limits, 3 counts – A.R.S. § 13-3107 (A)
- Resisting Arrest, 1 count – A.R.S. § 13-2508(A)(2)
Bell is being held on a $1 million cash-only bond.
The Phoenix Police Department is the lead agency on this case.
