Suspect arrested after man is shot to death in Mesa

The suspect is facing a charge of manslaughter for a shooting reported Sunday evening.

MESA, Ariz. — A 51-year-old man is facing a manslaughter charge after he allegedly admitted to fatally shooting a man inside his residence Sunday night.

The Mesa Police Department said Jason Greene has been booked into jail following an incident reported at about 8 p.m. near 48th Street and Brown Road.

Officers were dispatched to the neighborhood for reports of a shooting and, upon arrival, they found a man in his 40s who had been fatally shot. The deceased man has not been identified.

Court records show Greene initially told investigators he was woken up by a stranger knocking on his door and asking if he could spend the night at the residence. Greene said he eventually allowed the person inside and was attacked by the individual before firing his gun.

Greene later changed his story by telling investigators he actually knew the deceased person because he had been living at the residence for the last couple of weeks, records show. He claimed an argument had occurred between the two of them that resulted in Green retrieving a firearm to get the man to leave.

A struggle ensued and Greene allegedly shot the man in his chest, records show. The suspect additionally disclosed that he had allegedly consumed a significant amount of alcohol that day.
