Man turned over suspected explosive device at Phoenix military facility: PD

PHOENIX – Reports of a bomb threat on Thursday at a Phoenix National Guard base turned out to be a man in possession of what he believed to be an explosive. Police say the man drove to the military base to turn the device over to authorities.

What we know:

The Phoenix Police Department said a man drove up to the entrance of the Papago Park Military Reservation with what authorities “believe was some sort of military explosive device” at around 4 p.m. near 54th Street and McDowell Road on Aug. 28. The driver wasn’t allowed inside the base.

A police bomb squad arrived and took X-rays of the device. Officials with Luke Air Force Base will be in charge of disposing of the device.

What they’re saying:

The driver was detained for questioning, which includes “how they came into possession of this device.”

“At this time there are no confirmed explosions or reports of injuries,” the Arizona National Guard said. “Traffic in and out of the military reservation has been rerouted to avoid the affected area and is restricted until further notice.”

Police said on Friday that the man’s intentions were not “a threat in any way.”

“At this time there is no criminal intent related to this incident and again no threat to anyone was made related to this incident,” the department said.

What we don’t know:

We still don’t know exactly what the device or bomb is.

The driver involved wasn’t identified.
