Police said a patrol unit was investigating a man seen riding a bike in the area when the shooting happened. When the two officers tried to approach the man, he ran away. The officers ran after and caught up to him.
Police said the shooting happened as the officers were trying to arrest the man.
“The man resisted officers and was seen removing a knife from his possession,” police said. “As one of the officers continued struggling to detain the man, the other officer verbally alerted his partner to the knife and removed his duty gun, discharged it, and struck the man.”
More officers arrived at the scene along with emergency medical first responders.
The man, who remains unidentified at this time, was taken to the hospital, where he died.
Karolyn Lowery, who lives right down the street from the shooting, said she was on her couch when she heard several gunshots ring out.
“I remember the shots, I counted them,” Lowery said. “Everything was silent till I heard the shots go off.”
Security camera video she shared with 12News doesn’t show the incident, but in the video, you can hear about nine gunshots ring out. Lowery then said she walked outside and could hear officers telling the man to put the knife down. She then saw the person they were after on the ground and believed he was dead.
“When I saw that, I just started praying,” she said. “That’s all I could do.”
No officers were hurt in the incident that shook this south Phoenix neighborhood.
“It upset my day,” Lowery said. “My heart still ain’t beating right, really.”
The Arizona Department of Public Safety will be investigating the shooting.
