2k citations issued to Tempe speeders and red-light runners after program starts

Tempe Police announced that thousands of citations for dangerous driving were issued within the first two weeks of the program.

PHOENIX — Tempe’s photo enforcement program, designed to curb dangerous driving behavior, has resulted in over 2,200 confirmed citations within the first two weeks of its launch.

The city announced in April that they would install cameras at 14 intersections in Tempe.

Police say nearly 8,000 possible violations are still under review. If all confirmed, the city would have issued almost 10,000 violations in two weeks.

Citations for speeding or running a red light are $250, and drivers who speed and run a red light will get two citations. Excessive speeding could result in criminal charges.

Tempe Police say the number of citations issued indicates the frequency of bad driving and the need for enforcement tools to promote safe streets. There are fourteen traffic photo cameras and four mobile units in areas where speeding and serious or fatal crashes consistently occur.

“The data shows that these cameras effectively reduce crashes and serious injuries worldwide,” said Tempe Mayor Corey Woods.

According to a release, data provided on photo enforcement programs indicated that the City of Scottsdale saw a 65% drop in speed-related crashes after implementing the program.
