1 officer hospitalized, suspect killed after shooting

Tempe police responded to the area of Rural and Baseline shortly before 7 p.m. Friday.

TEMPE, Ariz. — A Tempe police officer is recovering after being shot in the leg during a shooting that killed a suspect, the Tempe Police Department said Friday night.

TPD said the incident started at a Circle K store near the intersection of Rural and Baseline at about 6 p.m. on Friday when they recognized a suspect who had a warrant out for his arrest due to allegedly selling drugs.

The suspect then got in his car and drove down the street into The Lakes neighborhood, where he got out of his car and took off running.

Officers chased the 32-year-old man, who then opened fire at the officers, hitting one of the officers in the leg.

Officers then returned fire and killed the suspect.

The officer who was shot was later taken to the hospital where he is recovering and has non-life-threatening injuries.

Tempe police said that officers had no indication that the suspect was armed.

Neither the suspect who was killed nor the officer who was shot have been identified, but Tempe PD said the officer who was shot was part of their ACTION team, a community response team that patrols areas with high crime rates.

The East Valley Critical Incident Response Team will investigate the shooting

This is a developing story. Additional information will be added as it becomes available.
