1 dead following shooting at Scottsdale apartment

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — A man has been arrested following a shooting in Scottsdale early Tuesday morning, the city’s police department said.

The Scottsdale Police Department said police and fire crews responded to a 911 call of a shooting at an apartment complex near Granite Reef Road and Montebello Avenue around 12:25 a.m. on April 2. Police said the call was made by the suspect, who stayed on the scene and was later detained by police.

When authorities got to the apartment, they contacted seven people, including 30-year-old Gino Mendoza, who was found with multiple gunshot wounds. 

Mendoza was given emergency aid and taken to a hospital, but he ultimately died from his injuries. 

The suspect, 25-year-old Jude Valle, was arrested and is facing one count of second-degree murder. However, police said the suspect is claiming self-defense, and details of the incident are still being investigated.

Arizona’s Silent Witness program allows people to send in tips and share information about crimes happening within their local communities. 

The program shares unsolved felony case information in multiple ways, including TV, radio and social media. 

Anyone who has information on a crime or recognizes a suspect described by the program is asked to call 480-948-6377, go to the program’s website online or download the Silent Witness app to provide a tip. The identity of anyone who submits a tip is kept anonymous. 

Calls to Silent Witness are answered 24/7 by a live person and submitted tips are accepted at all times. Submitted tips are then sent to the detective(s) in charge of the specific case. 

Individuals who submit tips that lead to an arrest or indictment in the case can get a reward of up to $1,000.
