Most people expected “Sinners” or “One Battle After Another” to dominate the field, but few expected “Wicked” to get the cold shoulder.
WASHINGTON — The Oscar nominations are out and just like every year there are a few snubs and surprises among the list of nominees for the Academy Awards.
Some surprises were record-breaking, as the vampire horror flick “Sinners” took 16 nominations, the most in the show’s 98-year history.
But others were heartbreaking, with “Wicked: For Good” failing to secure a single nomination.
Here are the biggest snubs and shocks from the nominee announcements on Thursday:
Ariana Grande
The singer and actress is the most notable missing celebrity from the list. She was previously nominated for Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice and an Actors Award, so fans were understandably upset to not see her on the Oscars shortlist.
Her song for the Wicked sequel, “The Girl in the Bubble,” also missed out for Best Original Song.
“Wicked: For Good”
Even without Ariana Grande, the fact that Wicked’s second chapter didn’t get a single Oscar nod is somewhat shocking. Last year, the first part got 10 nominations, including Best Picture. “No Place Like Home,” sung by Cynthia Erivo, was a longshot for a nomination for Best Original Song, but like Grande’s piece, also missed out.
Paul Mescal
The Irish actor was expected to have a shot at Best Supporting Actor, but didn’t make the Academy’s top five for his role in “Hamnet.”
“F1”
The Apple-produced racing film starring Brad Pitt managed to secure four nominations Thursday, including the nod for Best Picture. It’s up against some stiff competition there, but looks far more likely to take home Best Sound or Best Editing.
Chase Infiniti
While “One Battle After Another” did take home 13 nominations in 12 categories, one of its stars appears to have been snubbed for Best Actress. Chase Infiniti had all the momentum usually seen in strong contenders, with a trifecta of nominations for Golden Globes, Actors Award and Critics’ Choice.
The Casting Nominations
While it wasn’t a surprise that the Oscars decided to add a new category for this year’s show, it’s still worth pointing out. It included “Hamnet,” “Marty Supreme,” “Sinners,” “The Secret Agent” and “One Battle After Another.”
