Is New Year’s Day a federal holiday? Here’s what’s open and closed

WASHINGTON — If you need to grab something from the store for your New Year’s party, you’ll likely be in luck this week. If you’re restocking the day after, your luck might be worse on a New Year’s Day shopping trip. 

The day before the new year isn’t considered a federal holiday, but the first of the year is. So, many government agencies and financial institutions will be closed.

Target is usually open on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day in the U.S., with normal business hours. 

The company didn’t include New Year’s on its list of holiday adjustments for this year. 

Costco stores may have adjusted holiday hours on New Year’s Eve, so it’s a good idea to check the store locator for specific hours. 

The warehouse chain’s U.S. stores will all be closed on New Year’s Day in observance of the holiday.
