MESA, Ariz. – A shooting early Wednesday morning in the East Valley left an officer injured and a suspect dead.
What we know:
According to Mesa Police, officers on Oct. 29 responded just after 2 a.m. to reports of a possibly impaired man trespassing near Sossaman and Ray Roads. When officers made contact with the man, police say he was confrontational and fled the scene in a vehicle.
Police used a grappler to stop the suspect, who then did not follow officers’ commands. When officers tried to use less-than-lethal force to stop the suspect, police say he opened fire from inside his car.
One officer was struck and suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect was found dead inside the vehicle.
Traffic in the area is shut down due to the investigation. The public should avoid the area.
What we don’t know:
The suspect wasn’t identified. It’s unclear how he died.
