Firefighters escape Mesa house fire through bedroom window after roof collapse

MESA, AZ — A third-alarm fire destroyed a home near Greenfield Road and University Drive Monday afternoon in Mesa.

The incident began around 1 p.m.

The Mesa Fire Department says approximately 10 firefighters were trapped inside a bedroom after the roof of the home collapsed. All of the firefighters were able to escape, many through a bedroom window, all with minor injuries.

Large house fire burning near Greenfield Road and University Drive in Mesa

Fire officials say they believe the fire started from a barbecue and spread to the home.

Three firefighters were treated on scene for minor burn and back injuries.
