Watch: Alaska trooper uses surfboard to save teen who fell through ice


An Alaska State Trooper used a surfboard to rescue a teenager who fell through thin ice on a Kodiak lake, pulling the hypothermic boy to safety in a dramatic response caught on video.

The incident happened on April 19.

Footage released by Alaska State Troopers shows Trooper Anthony Will using a surfboard to reach and pull the teen from the icy water; at one point, the boy briefly manages to stand before slipping back through the ice.

According to Alaska State Troopers, the teen was then pulled to shore, where additional responders assisted in getting him safely to awaiting medical care.

What they’re saying:

“Using a surfboard from a local resident, Trooper Will crossed the unstable ice and pulled the hypothermic teen onto the board, lifting him out again when he slipped back into the water,” AST wrote on Facebook. “Sergeant Nathan Walsh advanced with a tow strap, threw it to Will, and Will secured it to the board.”
