TEMPE, Ariz — The Tempe Police Department is submitting a felony charge against a teenager allegedly involved in a deadly hit-and-run crash.

Officials with the Tempe Police Department said on Sep. 14, an 18-year-old man on a motorcycle crashed into a self-driving Waymo that was turning near Apache Boulevard and Rural Road. Police said seconds later, the man was hit by the driver of a Camaro, who then left the scene. The man died from his injuries, police said.

After an investigation, officers identified the driver of the Camaro as 19-year-old Ava Bellowe, who turned herself in several hours after the crash, police said. Officers said evidence from her phone, including photos, shows she was at Tempe Tavern from 10:18 p.m. Sep. 13 until 12:42 a.m. Sep. 14, when she walked home.

After getting home, Bellowe got into her car and drove away, which is when she allegedly got into the deadly crash and then left the scene, police said.

Bellowe was facing a charge of leaving the scene of a deadly crash, which is a felony. Tempe police announced on April 9 that they submitted a charge of hit and run, failure to remain at the scene of an accident involving death, against Bellowe.

The charges were submitted to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.
