Driver falls 100 feet in fatal Catalina Highway crash

A 35-year-old woman was killed Saturday on the road to Mount Lemmon when the pickup truck she was driving crashed through a guardrail and fell about 100 feet into a ravine, authorities say.

Bethany Redondo was driving on the Catalina Highway about 11:30 a.m. when she crashed near Milepost 5, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release. She died at the crash scene.

Northbound traffic on Catalina Highway was closed for bout seven hours during the recovery of the vehicle.

Investigators say preliminary findings indicate Redondo failed to negotiate a turn and drove through the guardrail, the release said.

The investigation continues.
