The group built a 15-foot-tall crescent moon in honor of Ramadan, a sacred month where Muslims perform good deeds and charitable giving, that stood on A Mountain, but it was found destroyed on Tuesday.
In a release, police say they are investigating this as a crime. Previous religious symbols from other faith groups have been displayed without issue, city officials said.
The reported damage is $20,000, police said.
The City of Tempe shared the following message to residents:
“There is no place in our community for this kind of hate. People of all faiths are welcome in Tempe and they have the right to feel safe and be safe. Tempe Police are continuing to provide additional patrols near places of worship this
holiday season and city leaders will continue to have conversations with faith leaders of all religions to maintain peace and safety throughout Tempe.”
