TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) – The search for Nancy Guthrie, who has been missing for nearly a month, continues as tips coming into 88-CRIME about her disappearance have dramatically declined late this week.
The support for the 84 year-old and her family is evident in her neighborhood, even as the area slowly returns back to normal, including at Guthrie’s home.
There’s no longer a sheriff’s deputy stationed at the house, which, according to a law enforcement source, likely indicates the final step in handing her home back to her family.
Yellow ribbons and displays are visible throughout the neighborhood, one neighbor, Jeff Laime, explained the displays bring attention to Guthrie’s disappearance, are a way for neighbors to console each other and show support for Guthrie and her family.
Laime emphasized that the area is safe, with neighbors looking out for each other. There has even been talk of establishing a neighborhood watch, he told News 4 Tucson.
The area has seen significant media attention over the past nearly four weeks.
“I think people understand that the media brings attention, that may lead to a tip, someone recalling something . . . and there’s a great value to that but obviously in a respectful manner, most of all to the family and to Nancy but also to the community,” Lamie said.
Lamie shared that neighbors have been very supportive in the effort to find Nancy, allowing access to their properties and searching their own yards soon after she went missing. Despite this support, the sobering reality remains that Nancy is still missing.
“We don’t know what the next breakthrough might be, so that’s why it’s so important to be vigilant and to continue to talk about this and be aware and get the word out,” Lamie told News 4 Tucson.
The most recent development in the case is Ring camera footage capturing a car driving more than 2 miles from the neighborhood on the night Guthrie disappeared around 2:30 am. A law enforcement source indicated that the footage is still under review and not considered a “dead lead.”
