In 2025, police made 80 DUI arrests connected to the Phoenix Open. So far, 20 people have already been arrested for alleged DUI in connection with the 2026 Open.
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — It’s one of the biggest parties of the year in the Valley, and with thousands of fans pouring into Scottsdale for the Phoenix Open and nightly concerts at the Bird’s Nest, law enforcement agencies say they’re taking extra steps to keep impaired drivers off the road.
With packed crowds, live music, and heavy drinking throughout the weekend, officers from across the Valley are increasing DUI patrols around the tournament and surrounding areas, hoping education and enforcement will prevent deadly consequences.
Fans told 12News they came to enjoy the atmosphere, both on the course and at the Bird’s Nest. Many attendees said they are planning ahead to make sure they get home safely.
“We brought Uber everywhere we’ve been,” one fan said. “We’re taking Uber, we’re taking Lyft, whatever we can. No, we’re not driving anywhere.”
Others echoed that message.
“We have a car coming to get us because our host has made sure we have a driver coming to get us,” one person said.
“Do not enjoy the day and drive home—do not do that.”
Those choices come as DUI numbers tied to the event remain a concern for police. Last year, there were 80 DUI arrests connected to the Phoenix Open. This year, police say 20 people were arrested for DUI just on Thursday night.
Law enforcement leaders say those numbers show why a strong presence is necessary.
“I want to be very clear tonight: impaired driving is 100% preventable, and yet it continues to take lives every single day,” said Mesa police Sgt. George Chwe, who also serves as the State Drug Recognition Expert Coordinator.
Chwe said he has seen firsthand the aftermath of impaired driving.
“I’ve stood on the side of the road at two in the morning looking at twisted metal, shattered glass, and families whose lives were changed forever because someone made one bad decision,” he said.
Back at the Bird’s Nest, fans said they understand the message—even as they continue to celebrate.
